There are many different meditative techniques that one can choose. Regardless of which practice you select, along the way, you'll pass through some common stages. One way to make this more clear might be an analogy to swimming. All forms of swimming are good for your health. A person doing the backstroke wouldn't look at one doing the breaststroke and argue that the latter isn't swimming.
The same thinking can be applied to meditation. One of the benefits in different meditative techniques is greater variety in a daily practice, to prevent boredom. While there can be discernible differences in the states achieved through the various forms of meditation, those differences probably aren't important right now. You'll learn about them as you develop your personal practice. The important part is to just get started in any way that feels comfortable for you.
